DEDICATION

My first online book is dedicated to the Dartmouth family - - including my two sons, my fraternity brothers, my classmates, and all those wonderful people met during almost 50 years of association with Dartmouth. That, of course, includes my lovely wife.
A green heart still beats in my chest,
My feelings in poems are expressed;
Remembrance and thought,
Your enjoyment is sought,
I do hope that my rhymes meet the test.

PREFACE

I have now written more than thirty poetic limericks related to Dartmouth College or its beautiful New Hampshire setting. In addition, I have written many other poems on subjects of particular interest to Dartmouth people - - poems about things green, poems about snow and winter, and poems about Native American life. Out of this whole grouping, I have selected 40 poems to include in my first online book entitled THE GREEN HEART. One of the advantages of an online book is the low cost facility to include images along with the poems, and I have intermixed more than 20 related pictures with the poems in order to enhance the poetic impact.

Without incurring any cost, you may review the TABLE OF CONTENTS and the first two poems in the book. After that, you will be given the option to order the book and arrange to get a password which will allow you to access the remainder of THE GREEN HEART. For the nominal cost of $5.00 (that will allow you 30 days of access) or just a little bit more ($8.00 for 180 days of access) you can enjoy all of the remaining poems and pictures. That is a second advantage of an online book - - the lower cost basis which permits pricing at a much lower level than is feasible with my hardcover books.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you plan to read the whole book, it is probably a good idea to print out the table of contents as a reference. You may want to print out the entire front section if you ultimately plan to print out the entire book for your personal use in the future. However, remember two things. First, it is almost impossible to get perfect page printouts due to the great variety of printers used. And second, since all of the contents are copyrighted, pages should not be passed on to others.

NEW ENGLAND

The cry of a loon, up in Maine,
Northland where the forest trails reign;
Kennebeck, jumping fish,
Steaming lobster, on dish,
Wilderness, endless pristine terrain.

Green Mountains of northern Vermont,
Old inns with a quaint restaurant;
Covered bridges so narrow,
Stone walls in the marrow,
Warm sweaters and life nonchalant.

New Hampshire my poems glorify,
A place where they live free or die;
White Mountains so green,
Winter sun, snow bright sheen,
Dartmouth college beneath a blue sky.

Massachusetts, sweet liberty spark,
Boston Commons and strolls in the park;
Cape Cod, sunny beach,
With Nantucket in reach,
Ski the Berkshires lit up in the dark.

Rhode Island not island at all,
Grand Newport where mansions enthrall;
Block Island by ferry,
Cool drinks with cranberry,
Trim sailboats glide past a sea wall.

Connecticut beauty widespread,
In Mystic, tall masts overhead;
The Hartford gold dome,
Weston, place I call home,
New England - - my heart - - closely wed.

Picture #1: The Old Pine Books Door Plate

The picture shows a metal wall hanging (with symbols of Dartmouth College) which is located just outside of the front door of my home. Included are THE OLD PINE, a barrel of rum, Eleazer Wheelock, and an Indian smoking a peace pipe. My wife saw a weathervane with this design up at a craft show in New Hampshire, and she commissioned the wall hanging for my birthday in 1997. It is a fitting door plate for OLD PINE BOOKS.

THE OLD PINE MAJESTIC

Tiny seed that is borne on the breeze,
Floats to rest as sweet nature may please;
Thus a pine tree is planted,
With growth to be granted,
Surviving the harsh winter freeze.

In spring, a new forest recruit,
Young sapling that has taken root;
Skyward journey begun,
Reaching up for the sun,
Gentle rains to promote each offshoot.

Good years only God can bestow,
Young tree springing forth from below;
Trunk rings being added,
All limbs are green cladded,
Pine needles bright glow as they grow.

Majestic, the pine truly towers,
Shade spread o'er the ground for long hours;
Grand king of its brothers,
Yes, dwarfing all others,
Endowed with the green natural powers.

The Old Pine a symbol so right,
Stately branches that soar to great height;
Standing, framed against sky,
Dartmouth glory on high,
Through the summer and long winter night.

The remembrance still grows, sight unseen,
From New Hampshire, proud tree, noble mien;
Lightning struck, passed away,
In my heart, to this day,
Planted there, amidst feelings deep green.
